In the early 20th century, skyscrapers transformed New York City and became symbols of American innovation and modernity. Beyond physically altering the urban landscape, these iconic structures changed perceptions of space, isolation, and control. With images from a 2024 Milwaukee Art Museum exhibition, Chyna Bounds will illuminate the complex impact of skyscrapers on the human experience through prints, photographs, and design objects by artists including Walker Evans, Paul T. Frankl, and Louis Lozowick. Bounds is Assistant Curator, American Decorative Arts and Design, at MAM. Pictured: Elsa Tennhardt (American, b. Germany, 1889–1980), Cocktail Set, ca. 1928.
