In celebration of 100 years of Black History Month, the Lakeview Branch will host a month-long Knowledge Quest highlighting 16 Black heroes who have made a lasting impact through their talent, courage, and contributions to history. Visitors are invited to explore and learn about these influential individuals throughout the entire month of February. Participation is easy—simply visit the front desk at the Lakeview Branch to begin the Knowledge Quest.
As part of the Black History Month programming, a special film viewing and discussion will take place on Monday, February 9. Attendees are invited to a free screening of Sinners, followed by a group discussion. Set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who return to their hometown, only to confront a powerful supernatural evil. Complimentary snacks and drinks will be provided.
In addition, the Lincoln Branch will feature a special Black History Month hat display honoring Mae Reeves, a pioneering milliner renowned for her custom-made hats. Reeves was active in her craft from 1940 to 1997 and made significant contributions to fashion and entrepreneurship. In 2009, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture acquired her collection of vintage hats, antique furniture from her millinery shop, and other personal items, preserving her legacy for future generations.
