Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or enjoying your first weekend away together as a couple, you’ll find wonderful romantic gems in Peoria. From luxe hotels to intimate dining experiences, you’ll fall in love all over again right here in the heart of Central Illinois. Here’s our ‘36 hours in Peoria Romantic Getaway’ itinerary:

DAY ONE

EVENING | Upon arriving in Peoria, check-in and drop your luggage off at the Peoria Pere Marquette to kickstart your journey. Originally constructed in 1927, this iconic hotel welcomes guests with its impressive lobby adorned with meticulously preserved Art Deco details. The Peoria Pere Marquette promises a blend of historic charm and luxurious comfort, setting the perfect tone for a romantic getaway. Once settled, venture up to Peoria Heights and discover Grandview Drive, renowned as the "world's most beautiful drive," according to Theodore Roosevelt. This scenic route offers winding paths through lush greenery, providing breathtaking views of the Illinois River and historic mansions. The calm ambiance and architectural beauty make it an ideal spot to park the car and take a leisurely stroll, soaking in the views after a day of travel.

Head over to Hearth in Peoria Heights for dinner. This farm-to-table fine dining concept is guaranteed to delight you with local meats delightfully and produce sourced from nearby farms, all served in new and creative ways with flavorful sauces and unexpected surprises. In the mood for something a bit more casual? The Publik House is another option in the neighborhood, offering fantastic burger and sandwich options.

Once you’re sufficiently stuffed, stroll over to 12 Bar for an after-dinner drink and one of the best rooftop views in the area. If you’re lucky, you may even catch some live music. For more date night destinations, click here.

DAY TWO

MORNING | One of the best parts about staying at the Pere Marquette is getting to roll out of bed and head right downstairs for breakfast in the morning. If this doesn't fancy you, try Ardor Breads and Provisions, a beloved bakery by locals and tourists in Downtown Peoria, known for its artisanal breads and baked goods. The bakery is a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for grabbing a quick breakfast pastry to go or settling in to enjoy a meal in the cafe.

Ready to see the city? Saturday mornings are for farmer’s markets and the Riverfront Farmers Market is a wonderful way to get to know Peoria. Every Saturday morning from 8am-noon from mid-May to late September along the riverfront, you’ll find vendors selling produce, baked goods, flowers, and all sorts of artisanal crafts, including pottery, jewelry, candles, soaps, and more. Explore the market, chat with vendors, and buy some snacks and souvenirs.

AFTERNOON | Make your way back to the car and drive out to Rocky Glen Park. This one-of-a-kind park was known as a lover’s hideaway for Peorians in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Hike the dirt trails, take in the natural beauty, and check out the incredible views overlooking the 70-foot box canyon with seasonal waterfalls. The hike in and out takes about 2 hours and has significant elevation changes but can be managed by hikers of any experience level.

After the hike, head back to Pere Marquette for some rest and relaxation.

EVENING | Feeling revived and hungry? Grab an early dinner at Connected, a great place for a romantic meal. This cozy, modern Italian restaurant offers a variety of classics like Mozzarella Caprese, Chicken Marsala, and Fettuccine Alfredo, as well as house specials including Costata Di Vitello, a bone-in veal chop broiled and seasoned with fresh sage.

Now, it’s showtime. Take part in the rich community theater history of Peoria at Peoria Players Theatre, one of the oldest community theaters in the country, by catching one of the six productions they put on each year. Corn Stock Theater is another fantastic option to check out.

After the show, head downtown for a nightcap at either the Bar at Black Band Distillery or Saffron Social. For more whiskey bars in Greater Peoria, click here.

DAY THREE

MORNING | Enjoy one last breakfast at either Zion Coffee Bar or Intuition Coffee + Juice. Both are coffee hubs near the hotel, each offering a delicious cup of joe and a quick bite to eat. Before you leave town, take a stroll on the Riverfront to take in the beauty of the river, and explore the shops before you head home with your love! Looking for more to do before you leave?
