This week (and for generations to come), Peoria will welcome pilgrims from across the country and around the world to celebrate the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen—one of central Illinois’ most beloved native sons and one of the Catholic Church’s great modern communicators. While the Beatification Mass will take place in St. Louis on Thursday, September 24, Peoria will serve as the spiritual home of the celebration, with special liturgies and events scheduled before and after the historic occasion.

Friday evening, the inaugural Sheen Awards Gala at the Peoria Civic Center will honor individuals using media, music, writing, preaching and other platforms to proclaim the Gospel. A separate ticket is required. If the gala is not on your schedule, make dinner a memorable part of the trip at Saffron Social, Jim’s Steak House or Rhythm Kitchen Music Café.
Saturday: Thanksgiving and Downtown Discovery
Return Saturday, September 26, for another full day of celebration. The Cathedral will host additional Masses of Thanksgiving beginning in the morning, followed by a Byzantine Divine Liturgy in the afternoon. The Hometown Festival continues nearby, giving visitors another opportunity to enjoy live programming, browse vendors and meet fellow pilgrims.
Between events, walk toward the Illinois River and discover more of downtown. The Peoria Riverfront Museum combines art, history, science and a giant-screen theater under one roof, while the Caterpillar Visitors Center tells the story of the global company founded in Peoria. A stroll along the riverfront offers a peaceful place to reflect on the weekend and take in views of the Illinois River.
