Marigolds symbolize joy, happiness and positive energy - all things you’ll find at the Pekin Marigold Festival! The festival honors the legacy of Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen and his attempt to make the marigold our national floral emblem. While his cause did not succeed, the festival has been a showcase event for the community since 1973. Here are some tips to make the most of the event:

HUNT FOR A GOOD TIME EARLY // Don't be alarmed if you see people sleuthing around town - they are likely looking for the Marigold Medallion and $1,500 prize. The first clue will be released on Monday, August 26, and then will be available daily until it's found.

TASTE OF PEKIN // Sample Pekin’s best dishes from local restaurants on Wednesday, September 4. Stay for the lip sync and karaoke contest.

ENTERTAIN THE KIDS FOR HOURS // A parade, a kids experience area, and, of course, a carnival! Be sure to visit the carnival for bracelet night on Thursday, September 5.

ROCK OUT // This year’s theme is Margolds Rockin’, so of course, you’ll find plenty of live music throughout the weekend at Showcase Stage. Don’t miss the Bicentennial Dragon Jam on Friday, September 6.

SHOP ART IN THE PARK // Shop and stroll around the lagoon at Mineral Springs Park on Saturday, September 7 and again on Sunday, September 8. This popular event attracts crafters and artisans from near and far.

RUN YOUR FIRST RACE // If you’ve never run a race at a local festival, the Marigold Mile is a great start. This friendly and relatively short race has been run by everyone aged 2 to 80. You can do it!

CHOW DOWN FOR A GOOD CAUSE // All vendors at the Festive Food tents are local nonprofits. Wash the food down with a cold drink in your souvenir mug from one of the many soda stations.

MAKE A WISH // Write a wish on your very own lantern and watch it be cast into the lagoon at dusk. Your $10 donation benefits the Steven D. Skinner Performing Arts Venue construction project.
