There’s something really special about realizing you don’t have to go far to feel like you’ve gone somewhere new. Living in Peoria, Illinois gives us that exact feeling, especially when we carve out time to explore nearby gems like Washington.
Washington Square is one of those places that instantly slows you down in the best way. It’s walkable, full of character, and packed with small businesses that make you want to linger. Whether you’re planning a low-key date day or just want to feel like a tourist in your own town, this is such an easy, meaningful way to spend a day together.
Here’s exactly how we’d do it.
MORNING
Start Slow with Coffee + a Cozy Stroll
We always say a good day starts with good coffee, and Washington Square absolutely delivers.
Kick things off at Faire Coffee, tucked right beneath Cornerstone Inn. If you’ve ever spotted their coffee truck around Peoria, just wait until you step inside their brick-and-mortar space. It’s warm, charming, and honestly feels like something you’d stumble upon in a bigger city.
Grab coffee, a pastry, and (highly recommend) a slice of quiche, then take your time easing into the morning. After that, head straight into a slow walk around the square. This square is what gives Washington the historic charm you can only find in small towns that have preserved their heritage. You’ll find everything from boutiques to antique shops to specialty stores. It’s the kind of place where you can pop in and out without any pressure.
A couple favorites from the locals:
- Jack of All Collective for unique finds
- Fern & Ridge for those aesthetic, giftable pieces you didn’t know you needed
If you’re in the mood to treat yourselves a little, you can even book something relaxing at Cloud Nine Massage Studio. Not a bad way to spend your morning!

AFTERNOON
History, Nostalgia, and Hidden Gems
Once you’ve done the loop, take a moment to soak in the history of the square. Stop by the Washington Historical Society or check out the plaques scattered around the area. You can even stand in the same spot where Abraham Lincoln once gave a speech. It’s such a simple thing, but it makes you feel connected to the place in a deeper way.
Then, this is a must. Step into Holland's Mercantile.
This place is pure nostalgia. Old-school candy bins, popcorn, and that feeling of being a kid again with a paper bag in hand. You genuinely can’t walk in without smiling. It’s one of those spots that reminds you why small towns matter so much.
By this point, you’ve probably worked up a little appetite or are ready for a break, so take your time grabbing a snack, sitting on a bench, or just people-watching around the square.
EVENING
Wind Down with Dinner + a Stay (If You Can Swing It)
If you’re turning this into a full day or weekender (which we highly recommend), stay into the evening. Washington really takes on a different kind of charm as the sun sets and the lights around the square come on.
For dinner, you’ve got a few great walkable options nearby:
- Tangled Roots Brewing Company for a laid-back but elevated meal + craft beer
- W Down Under for something casual and fun
- Parish's Pub for classic pub vibes
And if you want to make it feel like a true getaway, book a night at Cornerstone Inn.
We can’t recommend this enough for couples. Staying in a historic building right on the square, watching the lights glow at night, and knowing everything is just a short walk away. It’s simple, cozy, and honestly romantic in an understated way! Josie, the owner, is so accommodating and kind, and the rooms are spotless and stocked with everything you could need. (And pro tip: book room #2 if you want a whole suite to yourself with the best view of the square in town)
Why We’ll Keep Coming Back to Washington Square
Spending a day like this reminds us why we love living in Peoria so much. You don’t need a big trip or a packed itinerary. Sometimes it's just as simple as good coffee, a walkable loop, and spaces that feel like they have the same heart they were built with decades ago.
Washington Square is one of those spots you’ll keep coming back to, and every time, it feels just as good.
