How to Meet Your Match in Ten Days

With the new year comes new opportunities to see what, or rather who, is out there! Whether you have recently moved to the area or have lived in Greater Peoria your whole life, let me remind you that you can grab a friend or fly solo to the following spots to meet your match. In the wise words of Brene Brown, “There’s nothing more daring than showing up, putting ourselves out there and letting ourselves be seen.”

Coffee Shop

It is a classic for a reason. I was once in line at a coffee shop and a very smooth suitor struck up a conversation by commenting on my baseball hat. Grab a book and allow the caffeine to carry the moment at Zion Coffee Bar (Peoria) or cozy up near the fireplace and work remote at Reverence Coffee (East Peoria).

Dance Class

You do not have to be a professional in order to take advantage of group dance lessons in the area. In fact, it is best if you are a beginner and can ask for tips from those around you! Set aside an evening to attend seasonal line dancing at Haven on the Farm (Edwards) or salsa dancing at the Contemporary Art Center (Peoria) where sessions start with a lesson before transitioning to open dancing.

Haven on the Farm

Exercise

One of the easiest lines out there is, “Hey, do you need a belay?” Head to First Ascent Climbing & Fitness (Peoria) if you are especially interested in meeting someone focused on adventure and wellness. The Learning the Ropes class is an extra good fit for beginners and a perfect balance of instruction and time to chat. Alternatively, for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, Jacaranda Yoga and Barre (Peoria) offers a range of classes including hot yoga where the ambient temperature rises to between 95 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Board Game Session

Some may argue there is no better way to introduce yourself than when you are in need of a fourth player for a board game. Gather your favorite married couple and plan for a double date at one of the weekly meetup nights at Cabbage and Kings Games (Peoria Heights). For those adept at Pokemon or Magic the Gathering, you have additional chances for a cute meet at Sword and Board Game Store (Havana).

Trivia Night

Show off that big brain of yours and form a team for Thursday night trivia at Fox Pub and Cafe (Peoria). With a mix of regulars and new teams each week, you are sure to rub elbows with people you’ve never met before! Also be sure to try out Wednesday Night Trivia at Pour Bros (Peoria Heights). If you really hit it off with someone new, there are endless options for food and drink to keep the evening going! And if two options aren’t enough for you, find more here

Pottery Class

You know what they say…new year, new hobby. Both The Clay Den (Washington) and Wheel Art Pottery Studios (Peoria) offer a mix of one night events and multi-class registration if you would like to try your hand at pottery. Even if luck is not on your side as far as meeting someone goes, you will leave with a new handcrafted item to enjoy for years to come.

Casual Lounge

With new cocktail and mocktail options cycling through seasonally, you’ll never grow tired of the menu at The Missing Zither (Peoria). Keep an eye out for speciality events like themed or live vinyl dj nights. Matilda’s Cocktail Lounge (Peoria) also offers a comfy and nostalgic spot to enjoy food and drinks while playing a game or watching a vintage VHS. Start at one spot and see where the night takes you!

Pickleball

The pickleball community is known for being a welcoming and lively bunch. Lace up your sneakers and head over to Five Points (Washington) for an indoor league. In warmer weather, you can also enjoy the newly renovated outdoor courts at Glen Oak Park (Peoria). Take a friend or test your boldness and go alone looking for a new partner.

Volunteering

Serve others in your community by volunteering side by side for Habitat for Humanity (Peoria) or Midwest Food Bank (Morton). If nature is what you are more drawn to, Wildlife Prairie Park (Hanna City) and Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge (Lewistown) also offer regular opportunities to volunteer in groups or individually. TAPS (Pekin) and Mended Hearts (Metamora) are other great options for those who love animals.

May the odds be ever in your favor this year! If you need any date night destinations with your match, look no further.
